“Les dirigeants sont faits, pas né,” means “Leaders are made, not born.” It is a statement with which Charles de Gaulle would undoubtedly agree. De Gaulle was, and still is, considered to be one of the great leaders of the 20th Century. In his manual for leadership, “The Edge of the Sword,” he defined what he believed were the crucial qualities that a leader must possess, “A leader must possess intelligence and instinct and in order to persuade people to follow a specific path, a leader needs authority. A leader must be able to create a spirit of confidence. The leader must also possess mystery, character, and grandeur.”
De Gaulle knew that politics is theatre… and so is the world of business. A leader must assume “the role” of the leader. A leader needs to act like a leader. He or she must constantly be aware of how their actions and words affect others. They must understand the power of words, as well as the power of silence. They must know how to reassure, praise and comfort, as well as discourage, censure, and deter those they lead when needed.
How does a CEO, President, or other type of leader that you admire act and speak? How do they dress? How do they speak? How do they treat others - regardless of their position in the company? Think on these qualities and decide which you may be deficient. Find a leader from history and read their biography. Discover what made that leader such a success. Since leadership has nothing to do with birthright or genetics, with a little research and self-examination, you can mold yourself into a more effective and confident leader.
