Reducing Stress Through Non Force

Many times throughout the day, we try and force our agendas - at work or home, while driving or shopping and even with our family and pets. While it can be beneficial in some cases, the opposite is true, as well. Sometimes by forcing our agenda we cause stress and suffering for ourselves and others.

An interesting and liberating experiment to try is to choose to live a day without force or as it is called in Taoism – non force. Non force is one of the main concepts of Taoism and it means the ability to let things happen naturally. In essence, it is the principle of letting go and letting the flow of the world move through you and guide your actions.

If you’re interested in exploring the feeling behind non force, choose one day and move through it without forcing things to happen as you desire. Don’t push forward your agenda or wishes. Just go through the day allowing things to happen as they happen. If someone wants to speed by you as you drive to work, slow down and let them pass. If a person at work needs to push their demands, allow them that space and so on.

When you try this experiment, you will notice a few things. Firstly, things still get done – only without stress and suffering. Secondly, you will sense a surge of peace and also quiet power. You are still in the world, but not part of it. If you become still and watch others throughout the day, you will notice the folly behind other’s needs to rush, shove and prove their power.

Thirdly, as others hurriedly move through their day, they will create spaces – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual spaces. Viewing this, you can choose to move through the spaces that others create. In doing so, you will discover less stress and plenty of room to calmly go about your day – since so many others aren’t there.
